Hand formed, delicate patty served on a fresh, soft bun

Worth the trip just for the burger.-- Jim Schlagel

Staff Writer FALLBROOK | North County TimesBig wheels were turning into Nessy Burger on Tuesday as the small hamburger stand at Interstate 15 and Highway 76 served up a couple of hundred burgers to long lines of truckers, construction workers, military personnel and tourists.
Alistair McBain
Just another day at the hamburger stand, said Alistair McBain, a Scotland-born resident of Stewart Canyon who went from gamekeeper on a private estate to owner of the Camelot Inn pub in San Marcos to railroad-tie dealer to salmon fisherman to food vendor at festivals."I'm always looking for new ideas, new opportunities," McBain, 50, said as he discussed his 11-year Nessy Burgers outlet as well as past business exploits. "The crux of the whole Nessy Burger thing is the truck drivers. We're really trying to offer them service. They don't have a place to stop and park between Fontana and San Diego. If the food is good, you can get the truck drivers to stop, and then everybody else stops, too."
Word has spread of the burger place ---- really spread.
"A truck driver not so far back said he got on the CB and started hearing some drivers who had stopped at Nessy Burger talking about the place," McBain said. "'You don't know where I was driving though,' he said. 'Boston.'"
Word will spread some more at 9 p.m. June 21 on The Nashville Network as TNN airs another segment of "18 Wheels of Justice," a one-hour anthology drama series made by Stu Segall Productions of Kearny Mesa.
"We used Nessy Burgers for some exterior shots of our hero, a truck driver, getting a burger for 'Smugglers Blues,'" said Eva Schroeder, Segall Productions location manager. "The director is from Valley Center and knew of the place."
Nessy Burgers is the only eatery between Bonsall and Escondido along the I-15 corridor. It is directly across Highway 76 at the only place where there is a place for big rigs to pull over so big-rig drivers can rest.
And eat.
About 35 percent to 40 percent of the small hamburger stand's clientele comes via the large vehicles, McBain said. About 140 people a day troop to the small front window to order $6.95 meals that include burger, fries and pop; turkey or steak sandwiches; as well as a $3.25 breakfast sandwich menu featuring sandwiches with ham and egg, polish sausage and egg, or bacon and egg.
The 150-square-foot stand has four employees and sells from $5,000 to $7,000 worth of burgers, fries and tall tales a week. Well, tall tales are free, and related to the Loch Ness monster, a fabled inhabitant of McBain's native Scottish highlands where "Nessie" rules.
"After I sold the Camelot, I went salmon fishing, which was wonderful," McBain said. "I was wondering what the heck to do with my life. I was selling railroad ties that people used in landscaping, but somebody broke in my yard and stole the forklift.
"I bought this fast food trailer and went to a few fairs," McBain said. "I didn't want to be on the road, and saw where Caltrans had put in a park-and-ride lot. It took a year and a half to get permission to put the stand there, but they finally agreed because the stand provided some security for the lot."
The stand went up, but the Nessy name took a while. First, McBain tried Scotty's Burgers, but "I found out it was considered a fictitious name and somebody else was using it," he said.
The Loch Ness monster is known popularly as Nessie, but that name, too, has been taken. So McBain went to Nessy, and there it has stayed for 11 years ---- much to the joy of customers, be they regulars or just passing through.
"They make burgers right here," said senior airman Anthony Pumphrey after leading about a dozen fellow Air Force troops from a van to the stand.
"I stop here quite often when we travel from March Air Force Base in Riverside to San Diego," Pumphrey said. "Maybe once a month. The sandwiches are good."
Nessy Burgers is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. It's closed on Sundays.

Column - Fast Food DudeMessy Nessy just great
04/03/2002
Fred Winston of Rialto was the second truck driver in two weeks to insist I needed to try the legendary Nessy Burger.
"It's big. It's thick. It's juicy. It's flavorful. And it's a meal in itself," Fred said. He also warned me that the Nessy Burger is a messy burger.
Only a week earlier, another trucker, Donna Culwell of Corona, had fired off an e-mail with the same advice.
That was enough to get me cruising down the I-15 into northern San Diego County in search of Nessy Burgers.
Nessy Burgers are served from a little trailer just west of I-15 at the Highway 76 exit. That is 10 miles south of Temecula.
The trailer is in a park-and-ride lot next to a Mobil station. You eat outside at one of three picnic tables, under a canopy, or you sit your rear down on a log.
The place is convenient for truckers because they can park in the dirt lot across the street.
At lunchtime, Nessy attracts crowds and the small grill is completely filled with sizzling meat.
The Nessy Burger ($4.35) is bordering on monstrous. The core is a hand-formed slab of ground beef with onions mixed in.
It is served on a toasted sesame-seed bun. In between beef and bun are thick slices of tomato and onion plus a crisp chunk of iceberg lettuce. The only minus was the very ordinary pre-sliced American cheese. Hand-cut Cheddar would have brought this burger close to perfection.
The turkey burger is the same size and price, but maybe the white meat will make you feel less guilt.
French fries are crinkle-cut and come piled on a paper plate.
The chili-cheese fries ($2.95) were a meal unto themselves, smothered with a mild chili and melted American cheese.
Served hot, they were perfect on the cold, hazy, almost Scottish day I visited.
Other sandwich items include
the top sirloin steak ($5.95) and
the chicken breast ($4.95).Judy Mondero of Temecula brought her 75-year-old mother-in-law, Hazel Mondero, visiting from Pueblo, Colo. Judy explained that she doesn't usually eat at places like this, but Nessy is special. Hazel pronounced the burger "excellent."
You're probably still wondering about the whole Nessy thing. I am, too.
The only Scottish artifacts I could find were a couple Loch Ness monster souvenirs hanging in the window and a "Plaid to the bone" bumper sticker. The owner wasn't there when I visited, and a worker told me the place doesn't have a phone number for me to call. I left a note for the owner but hadn't heard back as of my deadline.
So for now the origins of the Nessy theme will remain shrouded in a very Scottish fog. Or perhaps one of my readers can help un-loch the mystery?
Reader reaction: Last week I printed an e-mail from a Hemet great-grandmother who didn't like my mug shot. She said my backward hat and the way I hold the burrito are in "very bad taste."
Jeannean Lomax of Corona fired off an e-mail in my defense:
"First of all I like the picture, the burrito you are holding looks good. As for the hat . . . very Californian, very hip. What else would a fast-food 'Dude" wear?
Hats on to you, Jeannean.

BEST SCOTTISH HAMBURGERS
Nessy Burger at Highway 76 and Old Highway 395, near Pala Mesa VillageUp on the windy heights inland from Oceanside, where Route 76 meets Old Highway 395, a little piece of Scotland survives. Alistair, an ex-gamekeeper from Inverness who says he has seen the Loch Ness Monster, and Sandy, his California lady, have set up an old Navy Exchange trailer as a canteen. They serve "Nessy Burgers." No, they're not fishburgers. "They're the nearest thing to the big old Aberdeen Angus burgers you get in Scotland," says Sandy. This summit settlement, with a Mobil station and a huge dusty rest stop for truckers, is a long way from anywhere. But what a location! The San Luis Rey river winding below, hilltops, avocado and orange orchards -- the gedunk with the million-dollar view. It gives you an appetite, so ask for the Hungry Trucker Breakfast (a half-pound Nessy Burger with two fried eggs on top). And while you're chewing, look at one of the books from their library of Nessy literature.
